A Hearth Remains

Working Still by Borg De Nobal

Picking up remnants

in the forgotten landscape

a hearth remains

rocks stacked toward the sky

a chimney

venting wounds

from stains

trampled into the dust of long ago

pained faces

in the lingering smoke

never completely fade

while the garden long dead from drought

traces the working contours of this country

those pained faces… the images

that stare back at us from the mirror

as we wash the ghosts from the facade

allow us to feel a little different

but in reality

nothing much has changed
