Snippets from another Christmas Day

Summer heat

wraps up Christmas morning

in the silence of missing bells

on bicycles

where once children balanced on wobbling wheels

as they rolled down the street of experience

now laughter is kept in doors

lightening fast thumbs

dance over controllers

producing screens of some other experience

that’s beyond me

somewhere

caterpillars are eating away days

on a new calendar

everything seems

mental as anything

images of spacemen

appear like cockroaches

sneaking up on the warm glow

of a sleeping home

in a deep indigo night

I need not worry

my father 81+ years

can stand toe to toe

against a wowser half his age

with a… “are you talkin to me” attitude

of a Scottish Di Niro

born from the streets of Glasgow

he’s not yet willing

to step

into any long good night

Me, I find myself drifting

into a line from a poem

following some human parade

that leads me to linger on Love Street

where the creatures meet

and I can’t help but wonder what they do in there

as I wait

for a Spanish caravan

to take me across an instrumental bridge

to get away, to get away

my son takes photographs with his new camera

while we dance

memories of a day

where things just a…

don’t seem ta

add up to anything more than one more Christmas day

a flood with new and old memories

that sometimes need more than a hard drive

to live and breathe on their own

each with a sting, a clarity

that digital will never really capture

it’s on those wobbling wheels

charging ahead into spur loaded trees

leaving a sharp pain

of a moment

that in years spins into laughter

that’s shared

over Christmas dinner.

  1. very nice…your thrid stanza is where you hooked me…the caterpillar eating on the calendar, very cool image and you get a little crazy there with spacemen and such which i like……and then when you turn to yourself as well…and wobbling wheels charge ahead…best that it is laughter that can be shared in the end as well…hope you had a very merry christmas

  2. I think this season brings old memories, so different from what we now experience all around us ~ Yet while we can make new memories, we must as these moments are so fleeting ~ Merry Christmas to you ~

  3. Memory will always be sharper than images from a hard drive, imbued not only with sights and sounds and smells, but with an emotion in the moment that the heart evokes, even when long past.

  4. Old and new memories, different but still worthwhile. Wonderful images here. I love these lines “a flood with new and old memories
that sometimes need more than a hard drive
to live and breathe on their own
each with a sting, a clarity
that digital will never really capture”.
    So true 🙂
