Shhh don’t tell…we like it just the way it is

Nestled within the mangroves

a slim smile of houses greet the sea

an old man in blue gumboots

nearly lost in the misty rain

secures his row boat

looking as natural as the migratory birds

fossicking for titbits

just another hermit crab dodging protruding beaks

slowly weaving their home

over the mudflats patrolled by feisty soldier crabs

with their hut… hut… formations and soft clicking marches

beneath the breeze

a cold wisp of a ghost falling overboard

one hundred years ago

still haunts modern tides

his namesake stamps the shores – Godwin

dusting across the top of mangrove forests

a fugitive osprey, is chased

by a flock of nervous corellas

squawking above kookaburras laughter

while kingfishers take turns hammering

a mangrove trunk

at night tawny frogmouths watch – eyes in the bark

while possum’s growl

the deep dark night lighted by the distant glow

Brisbane, a slight exhale across the bay

and

Bribie a bridge away

but paradise is walking along Godwin

  1. oh can i sign up for a visit! smiles…love all the little detail and sensory texture you gave where you live….ah…i like the soft clicking marches of the hermit crabs…so cool…the birds, the possum growl, even the man in his boat…you really capture well where you are from…

  2. This is wonderful! I especially like this: “the mudflats patrolled by feisty soldier crabs
with their hut… hut… formations and soft clicking marches.” Truly sounds like paradise to me.

  3. You are so right…your place sounds so much like mine. We even have those little Kingfishers, ‘possums and mangroves too…so much in common, I like that. And I love how you describe your home…with much affection. Lovely.

  4. oh wow..this sounds like a beautiful place to live…i wish i had a beach close by…the crabs..birds…sounds…the whole feel of the piece is so peaceful…sigh…
