Creating OfFences with No Responsibility Taken

Building fences

requires a dedication to measurements

lengths, widths, heights

style, design and structure

what are you trying to keep in

or keep out…

it’s all about screening

such frustration

keeping things level

when the land is not

and the boundary immeasurable

gaps are bound to open

that can’t be closed

though they can be hidden

with a little creative thought

imagine if we started tearing them down

suddenly we could wander freely

through the delights of different gardens

sharing our own bit of paradise

with our neighbours

feeling a little bit like a…

community

but some people are funny about

their borders being crossed

without permission

others treading on their own little patch of lawn

& wanting to share their piece of paradise

and so…

construction continues

adding more deterrents

ring lock, barbed wire, electricity

and then up go the signs

Keep Out

Private Property

No Trespassing

Wrong Way Turn Back

Do Not Enter without the owner’s permission

you’re not welcome

just go back to where you came from

it’s all ours and that’s the way

WE like it… says the MAN in charge.

  1. Interesting.
On the whole it seems to be for keeping out more than keeping in.
I prefer stone walls to fencing, to keep the cattle out 🙂
Wish fences could keep smells of smouldering grass fires on lovely summernights at bay too.

  2. Good fences can make for good neighbors but I, too, wonder about a world where we don’t need quite so many fences, and not quite such a love for them. Great write.

  3. keeping things level

when the land is not…that is a loaded couple lines…fences are interesting…too high and they keep everyone out…too low and whats the use….as if we own any of it eh? def some wisdom zingers in this…smiles….

  4. Living in the USA where many forms of sharing are actually against the law, fences are a must thrust upon us by the closed minded who wish to cloister themselves further from reality. Governments it seems will never be enlightened enough to tear down the fences and borders and let humans wander freely! Government = repression and fences are just a small aspect of that mentality! Great thought provoking write !!!

    • I find it amazing that there could be forms of sharing that are against the law… we haven’t got that bad yet but recent developments leaves one wondering… would be nice to tear a few fences down. 🙂 Thanks for your comment.

  5. ha – there’s much to say about building fences…great symbolism in this – and i wish we could live with less fences and more open to others invading our space..
