Baby

Her stoic grace spoke

a mysterious whisper

carried on the calm,

winter breeze

swirling around me

her eyes held a truth

as she stood proud

with her herd

 she carried an air

almost nonchalant, as if she cared little

for humans and their fragility

She challenged us with a look

and a flick of her tail

“ask me if you will,” she said in silence.

“ my heart is one of a gypsy who knows all,

who will show you, what you

have not had the courage to see.”

And as if on cue, high above

the gentle, cry of a Whistling Kite

pierced the air

It was then I led Baby

through a maze of human barriers

and when she stopped

I knew, here it is, that day,

“So what is it?” she asked without words

“Really?” the question rang loud in the silence.

“Maybe you should think about that.”

and we moved on, her strength at my shoulder

when reaching that final hurdle

she pushed me forward with her head

her patience was thin, “what the hell are waiting for?

An invitation?”

I felt her command in my heart

and just like that, we stepped over

into a new way of thinking

Tossing our heads in the wind we stood tall

like the gum holding its own

despite the loss of its limbs

  1. What a captivatig horse poem, Dianne! Horses do have ‘stoic grace’ and ‘an air almost nonchalant’.  I especially love the togetherness of horse and human in the lines:

‘Tossing our heads in the wind we stood tall
like the gum holding its own’.

  2. Damn PCat. All we gots is memory and heart and words to describe as best we will wonderous time spent

“my heart is one of a gypsy who knows all,

who will show you, what you

have not had the courage to see.”

    indeed.

  3. This is so true: “her eyes held a truth

    as she stood proud

    with her herd

     she carried an air

almost nonchalant, as if she cared little

    for humans and their fragility”

You have captured horses beautifully with your words and I wish I could pet one right now during my lunch break.
